Biography
Carlo Pedretti was born on January 6, 1928 in Casalecchio di Reno (province of Bologna , region Emilia-Romagna ) [3] . The life and work of Leonardo da Vinci Carlo was interested in since childhood. At the age of 13, imitating Leonardo, he learned to write with his left hand and read mirrored text. The first publications of Carlo Pedretti about Leonardo da Vinci are dated 1944, when he was 16 years old. At the beginning of 1952, the Milanese newspaper Corriere della Sera accompanied its material on Pedretti with the headline “At the age of 23 he knows everything about Leonardo” [4] .
Since 1960, Carlo Pedretti worked at the University of California at Los Angeles [5] as a professor, his specialization was the history of art of Italy [3] . In addition to teaching, he led the Armand Hammer Center for the Study of the Heritage of Leonardo da Vinci. Since 1993, Pedretti has been an Emeritus professor [5] .
For many decades, Carlo Pedretti was considered a leading specialist in the work of Leonardo da Vinci. He is the author of more than 50 books and 700 articles and notes published in different languages. In the 1980s, the renowned art historian Kenneth Clark wrote about Pedretti that “he is undoubtedly the greatest expert on Leonardo of our time” [4] .
In 1985, Pedretti confirmed the authenticity of the wax figure , which may have been a model for the monument to - the French governor of Milan in 1503-1511, the patron saint of Leonardo [4] [6] . At the same time, Pedretti expressed doubts about the ownership of Leonardo’s painting “The Savior of the World ” [7] , which was sold at Christie's at a record price of $ 400 million in November 2017 [8] .
In 1971, Pedretti's merits were marked in Italy with a gold medal " For Contribution to the Development of Culture and Art " [9] , and in 1972, his contribution was awarded a quote from the US Congress [10] . He was also awarded the Order of Merit for the Italian Republic : degrees of a gentleman (1972) [11] [12] , degrees of an officer (2010) [13] [14] . He was awarded honorary degrees from the (1991), the University of Urbin (1998), the Catholic University of Milan (1999), as well as the University of Can Normandy (2002). He was an honorary member in San Miniato , the in Urbino , and the in Modena [15] . In 2001, Pedretti was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen Arezzo , and in 2008 - the Honorary Citizen of Vinci - the city where Leonardo was born [4] . Subsequently, he also became an honorary citizen of the Italian city of Florence (2010), the French commune Romorantin (2010), as well as the Italian communes of Lamporecchio (2011) and Pennabilli (2015) [15] .
Since 2013, Carlo Pedretti has been living in a villa in Lamporecchio (province of Pistoia , Tuscany region). There he died on January 5, 2018, not having lived one day before his 90th birthday [3] .
