Maria Mercedes Coroy ( Spanish María Mercedes Coroy ; born 1994 , Santa Maria de Jesus , Guatemala ) is a Guatemalan actress . She made her debut in the movie " Ishkanul Volcano ", receiving a prize for Best Actress at the International Festival of New Cinema in Montreal , Canada . In turn, the film itself received more than twenty international awards.

Biography
Maria Mercedes Coroi, the sixth child in a family of nine brothers, spent her childhood in her hometown of Santa Maria de Jesus , on the slopes of the volcano Agua [1] . Since childhood, she loved to participate in plays and folklore dance performances, however, she was only able to reach the fifth grade of elementary school, as she was forced to help her mother sell fruits and vegetables at the market in Palin, Escuintla . At the age of 17, Maria Mercedes Koroy was able to continue her education thanks to the National Program for the Eradication of Literacy in Guatemala (CONALFA) and at the time the movie “ Iskanul Volcano ” started shooting, it was already the third year of training.
In 2013, Maria Mercedes Koroy was elected Queen of the City of Santa Maria de Jesus, and then Queen of CONALFA in the Department of Zacatepeques .
At the end of 2013, the search for film screening began, which lasted several weeks. They were followed by a month and a half of filming on the Pakaya volcano and in Amatitlan . After finishing work on the film, Maria Mercedes Kora, along with director Jairo Bustamante and actress Maria Telon, presented a picture at international film festivals in Berlin , Guadalajara , Toulouse .
After filming and screenings at film festivals, Maria Mercedes Koroy returned to her hometown, where she continued to help protect the rights of the population and volunteer in various social projects to work with children and older people.
