Biography

He graduated from the philological faculty of Kuibyshev University . He lived in Moscow. He made his debut in literature with the story “On the Line” in the Parisian Continent magazine (1986, under the pseudonym Yuri Lapidus). For two months he headed the prose department in the journal New World (1995). Emigrated to Germany (1996); worked as a guide on the cultural and historical routes of Europe. For a short time he was the editor-in-chief of the Grani magazine (1996), and subsequently was a member of the editorial board of the journal Foreign Notes .

The critic V. Serdyuchenko accentuates the problematics of emigration as a life choice in the experience of Yuri Maletsky: “In the Continent there appeared a woeful revelation of Yuri Maletsky (Prose of the Poet) about the true fate of Russian humanities in a foreign land. My friends who moved to the West hide, so to speak, their emigrant skeletons in a closet, but there was a man who turned this sad truth out. The title of the story is amazingly accurate. This is a report of the clash of beautiful-hearted immigrant tales with the fierce prose of emigrant life. To the credit of the author and his hero, there is no anathema to the West that deceived him. It was he who acted as a naive boob, who lost his job, squandered his last family savings and decided to improve his affairs due to mythical literary earnings in the West. You read this and you wonder: are it really possible such infantile simplicity? Perhaps - Yu. Maletsky answers this, and continues with a gnashing of teeth to describe the calvary of Russian Candida in the emigrant West. But, we repeat, the hero blames himself for his misfortunes - and in the end he gets to the very truths that were mentioned at the beginning: emigration is a state of the soul. “To embark on such an adventure as moving to another country / ... /, having more than forty years in the background, twenty years of non-working discipline for 8 hours a day, the absence of any useful specialty and the ability to learn it, a family that needs to be pulled and drag out for years until at least the eldest (scary to think about the younger one) becomes an adult independent person - only a madman and, moreover, a socially dangerous madman can do this from such puberty motives as a tendency to self-knowledge ” [1] .

He died after a long, serious illness on February 20, 2018 in Moscow. The funeral was held in the Church of the Resurrection of the Word on the Assumption Enemy.

Creativity

 

The first publication by Maletsky is the short story “On the Line” in the Paris Continent (1986, under the pseudonym Yu. Lapidus). In Russia, it began to be published at the time of the collapse of the Soviet matrix in the magazines Znamya, Friendship of Peoples, and especially often in Moscow Continent. The first book, Shelter, was published in 1997 by the Book Garden publishing house (Moscow), and the second, Greetings from California, was published in Vagrius (2001, Moscow). The most active period of his work was in the late 1990s and the first decade of the new century. Published as a prose writer, critic, essayist. He polemicized with the religious and philosophical concept of Lyudmila Ulitskaya, which she proposed in the novel "Daniel Stein, translator."

He published essays and articles in the Parisian newspaper Russian Thought.

Maletsky’s last book, “Smile Forever,” was published shortly before his death in the St. Petersburg publishing house Aleteya (2017). To a large extent, it is an authorial confession.

The novels “Love” and “The End of the Needle” were included in the short list of the award “ Russian Booker ” (1997, 2007). Awarded the prize of the magazine "Golden Age" (1995).

Yuri Maletsky is the leader of modern Russian prose of the religious horizon. And only global deformations of the actual literary map prevent many from accepting and realizing it [2] .
