Name description and origin
The water surface area of the lake during rainy seasons is about 7.4 km² [2] [3] (for other sources - 15 km² [4] ). In dry time due to evaporation the water level in the lake falls [2] [3] .
According to Hawaiian linguists, Mary K. Pukui , Samuel H. Edberta The Ester T. Mukuni lake is named after the island of the same name and is derived from the name of the mythical bird Halulu , which fed on people [7] .
History
Before the attack on Pearl Harbor and the beginning of World War II for the USA, the island on which the lake was located belonged to the farmer Alimer Francis Robinson . The central area of the island off the coast of the lake was plowed up to prevent the landing of Japanese aircraft and use the island as an airfield. Due to the fact that landing on the island was impossible, the plane of the Air Force of the Japanese Empire suffered an accident here . Traces of furrows are still visible on the island [8] [9] .
Biodiversity
On the lake and in its vicinity live Hawaiian coot , Hawaiian walker and Hawaiian Mallard [8] [10] . A mullet lives in the lake. Before joining the USA, the Kapu Hawaiian law forbade fishing in the lake, except for the harvest season. Today the lake is used for breeding mullet [11] .
