The institute has two campuses. The Ansan campus was completed in February 2001 and is a place for learning art, and the Namsan campus is the center where art is created and shown to the public. [1] The Namsan campus has a Drama Center (Greek Theater), an art gallery, a drama theater and a film studio.

The Institute has 2,400 students in 15 faculties.

The university offers a three-year associate degree program and a four-year bachelor's degree program.

The current president of the university is Yu Dokhyun.

History

  • On August 26, 1958, Yu Chi Jin, the pioneer of Korea’s modern theater, founded the Korea Theater Research Institute.
  • On April 12, 1962, the construction of the Korea Theater Research Institute was completed and the Drama Center was opened.
  • In September 1962, the Theater Academy was founded, the founding president of Yo Sok Ki ( cor. 여석기 ).
  • On July 6, 1963, the Korea Theater Awards (Dongnang Theater Awards) was established. The first winner was playwright Pak Seung-hee (박승희).
  • In March 1963, the Theater Library was opened (26 m², 25 seats, 6,000 books).
  • In May 1973, Rector Yu Dok Hyun visited Moscow to attend the 15th Congress of the International Theater Institute (MIT) as the representative of Korea.
  • In February 1982, the Korean Theater Research Institute was renamed the Korean Arts Research Center.
  • In February 1998, the Korean Arts Research Center was renamed the Tonan Arts Center.
  • In June 1998, the Seoul Professional College of Art was renamed the Seoul College of Art.
  • In September 2002, the Tonan Youth Class was opened.
  • On September 29, 2005, a special performance was held in honor of the 100th anniversary of Yu Chkhizhin and the 43rd anniversary of the Drama Center. Arthur Miller ’s play “The Death of a Salesman ” directed by Chan Jin .
  • On May 1, 2012, the Seoul College of Art was renamed the Seoul Institute of the Arts.

Founder

Yu Chi Jin ( cor. 유치진 , 1905−1974) was born in Thongyong , Gyeongsangnam-do , playwright, director and teacher. He decided to devote his life to awakening the stagnant world of Korean art of that time. [2]

To lay the foundation, he created the Dramatic Arts Research Society in 1931. In 1962, he founded the Drama Center, the Korea Theater Research Institute and the Theater Academy, which became the modern Seoul Art Institute.
