Baird ( English Baird ) - a city in the United States , located in central Texas , the administrative center of Callahan County . According to the census for 2010, the number of inhabitants was 1,496 people, according to the US Census Bureau in 2016, 1,513 people lived in the city [2] . Baird is part of the Abilene metropolitan statistical area .

History

 
The Texas & Pacific Railway Railway Station is now used as a tourist center and museum of Byrd transport.
 
Presbyterian Church Byrd

The settlement was founded in 1880 at a fork in the Texas and Pacific Railway and named after railroad engineer Matthew Byrd. In 1883, Byrd replaced the city of Bell Plain as the county seat. Most residents moved to the new center. In 1881 the post office was opened, at that time the settlement was called Vickery, the city received its modern name in 1883. In 1887, the production of the weekly newspaper Baird Star began. In 1889, Byrd received a charter, and the formation of local government bodies began. In 1907, the only hanging in the history of the convicted for murder took place in the city. There were cotton-cleaning enterprises, a refinery and several mills in the city. The city has a district hospital, the city is the center of supply of components for oil production and cattle breeding [3] .

Population

According to the 2010 census, 1,496 people lived in the city, there were 648 households and 392 families. The racial makeup of the city: 92.2% - whites , 0.3% - African Americans , 0.9% - Native Americans, 0.5% - Asians , 0% (0 people) - residents of Hawaii or Oceania, 4.7% - other races, 1.3% - two or more races. The number of Hispanic inhabitants of any races was 12.2% [7] .

Of the 648 households, 29% have children under 18 years old. 44.4% of households were married couples living together (15.1% with children under 18), in 13% of households, women lived without their husbands, in 3.1% of households, men lived without wives, 39.5% of households were not families. Only one person lived in 35.3% of households, 17.6% were single elderly people (over 65). The average household size was 2.25 people. The average family size is 2.91 people [7] .

The population of the city in the age range was distributed as follows: 23.9% - residents under 20 years old, 20.3% are between the ages of 20 and 39, 34.5% - between 40 and 64, 21.1% - 65 years and older . The average age is 45.2 years [7] .

According to surveys of five years from 2012 to 2016, the average household income in Byrd is $ 41,190 a year, the average family income is $ 51,618. The per capita income in the city is 19,887 dollars. About 15.3% of families and 21.6% of the population are below the poverty line. Including 43.1% under the age of 18 years and 13.6% over 65 years [8] .
