Biography
Ukrainian. Greek Catholic . Son of a tanner .
In 1846 he graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of Lviv University .
In 1849-1851 he studied law at the Jagiellonian University .
In October 1851 received a doctorate. Since 1855 - lawyer . He worked as a legal adviser to the city of Krakow , in particular, he fought for the return of the Polish language to schools and state institutions.
In 1861 he was elected ambassador (deputy) of the Galician regional diet in Lviv. Member of the Polish uprising in 1863 .
In 1866 he was elected a member of the city council of Krakow .
In 1874-1881 he was twice elected president ( mayor ) of Krakow. As mayor, he initiated many innovations, in particular, the construction of a crypt honored at Skalka , the restoration of an outstanding medieval monument - Sukiennits ( Cloth Hall (Krakow) ), the creation of a National Museum in Krakow , the construction of a complex of facilities for fire service, etc.
In February 1881, the Kraków Council granted him honorary citizenship of the city, and in April 1884, for services to the city, he received an honorary award — a valuable karabel (a special type of saber ).
In 1881–1886, Zlibkiewicz was a marshal (speaker) of the Galician regional seim . Initiator of the road construction along the gorge. Dunajec from Szczawnica to the Red Monastery.
Emperor Franz Joseph I granted him the title of count. In November 1886 he became an honorary citizen of the city of Lviv .
In November 1886, returning from Lviv to Krakow, he fell ill and died of pneumonia . He was buried in Kraków's Rakovica cemetery . The gravestone was erected at the expense of the city of Krakow.
In the modern historiography of the city of Old Sambir, the name of M. Zlibikevich is not popular - he is considered a purely Polish politician. In the city there is Zlibkevich Street, but there is no museum of the count or any other references to it.
Memory
- In 1885, a canal between the Danube and the Vistula was named in honor of Zliblikevich in the Dombrowski District (now the Malopolska province ).
- In the center of Krakow, at the end of the 19th century, a monument was erected to Zlibikevich, as one of the most prominent presidents of the city of Krakow.
- In 1887, at the suggestion of the Kraków Council, the magistrate named one of the streets in the center of Krakow in honor of Ziblikiewicz.
- In pre-Soviet Lviv, part of the current Ivan Franko street bore the name of M. Zibliyevich, also in Buchach (now Lesya Ukrainka Street).
- Until 1991, one of Krakow ’s Vistula boulevards was named after him.
