Biography

Born in Moscow. In 1930 he graduated from the Moscow Higher Technical School with a degree in chemical engineering. For two years he worked at the Dorogomilovsky Chemical Plant. Since 1932 he worked at Moscow State University , and since 1936 he was also a senior researcher at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (until 1960).

While working in the laboratory of N. D. Zelinsky , under the guidance of B. A. Kazansky, he graduated from the graduate school of Moscow State University and defended his dissertation: for the degree of candidate of sciences “Hydrocarbons of a series of bicyclo (1,2,2) heptane and bicyclo (2,2,2) octane , their relation to dehydrogenation and hydrogenation catalysis "(1936) and doctors of science" Research in the field of aromatization of paraffin hydrocarbons "(1950). Since 1951 - professor at Moscow State University; headed the department of "chemistry of oil" (1960-1968), then - "chemistry of oil and organic catalysis" (1968-1983) of the Faculty of Chemistry.

The main research of A.F. Plate is related to the chemistry of hydrocarbons . Together with ND Zelinsky and B. A. Kazansky discovered (1934) the catalytic reaction of selective hydrogenolysis of cyclopentane hydrocarbons with the breaking of only one of the five carbon-carbon bonds. Together with B.A. Kazansky in 1936, he discovered the reaction of C6-dehydrocyclization, or aromatization of paraffin hydrocarbons .

He developed industrial methods for the preparation of aldrin , dieldrin and 5-ethylidenenorbornene-2. In the 1960s, he proposed a universal method for introducing adamantyl residues into aromatic and unsaturated compounds. Together with M.E. Volpin in 1949, he proposed a catalytic method for the synthesis of nitriles based on olefins and ammonia. In 1970, based on titanium and zirconium intermetallic hydrides with group VIII metals, he created a new class of effective catalysts for the conversion of hydrocarbons and heteroatomic organic compounds.

He was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor (twice). Laureate of the USSR State Prize (1985).

Under the leadership of A.F. Plate, more than 30 master's theses were completed and defended, several doctoral; one of his students became a full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences .
