Content
History
The settlement from which the city later grew was founded on December 8, 1535 by Alonso de Heredia ( Alonso de Heredia ) [1] .
Geographical position
The city is located in the northwestern part of the department, at the foot of the western slope of the Maria mountain range, to the southeast of the Maria la Bacha lagoon, approximately 45 kilometers southeast of the city of Cartagena , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 37 meters above sea level [2] . The municipality of Maria la Bach borders in the north with the territory of the municipality of Arjona , in the northeast with the municipality of Maates , in the east with the municipality of San Juan Nepomuseno , in the southeast with the municipality of San Jacinto , in the south with the municipality El Carmen de Bolivar , in the southwest and west - with the territory of the department of Sucre . The area of the municipality is 547 km ² [1] .

According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2015 was 48,079 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by year:

According to the 2005 census, men accounted for 52.1% of the population of Maria-la-Bahi, women - respectively 47.9%. Racially, Negroes , mulattoes, and Ryshalese made up 97.4% of the city’s population; whites and mestizas - 2.4%; Indians - 0.2% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 76.8%.
Economy
The basis of the economy Maria-la-Bahi is agriculture [1] .
61.5% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are commercial enterprises, 23.1% are industrial enterprises, 15.2% are service enterprises, 0.2% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
