Argobba (language)

Argobb language (ዓርጎባ) is the language of the Argobb people [2] . The number of Argobb speakers in Ethiopia is approx. 44,000 people (2007, estimate).

Description

The Argobba language is spoken by about 40,000 people living in the area northeast of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. This language belongs to the southern Ethiopian branch of the Ethiosemitic languages ​​(along with Amharic and Guraga ).

Classification

The Argobb language is one of the Ethiosemitic languages (southern subgroup) included in the Semitic group .

Dialects

For a long time it was believed that the Argobb language is a dialect of the Amharic language, but now it is classified as a separate language. Argobba consists of four main dialects: Garer (dead), Aliyah Amba, Sheva works and Schonke.

Nowadays, there is a transition of native speakers of the Argobb language to the use of Oromo [3] and Amharic, which are enough [ clarify ] related [4] .
