Breed History

According to one version, the origin of the breed begins with a smooth-haired fox-terrier named Foiler - the first fox-terrier registered by the English Club of Dog Breeding around 1875-1876. [2] According to another version, the breed is a mixture of several breeds - the English Toy Terrier , Chihuahua , smooth-haired Fox Terrier. The best qualities of these breeds are combined in the Toy Fox Terrier breed.

The breed was formed at the beginning of the twentieth century, but was officially recognized by the American Joint Kennel Club (UKC) in 1936 and assigned to the group of terriers. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the breed in 2003 (the “Toy” group) [3] .

Appearance

Toy Fox Terrier is a miniature athletic-looking dog with developed muscles on strong legs. Demonstrates both grace and agility, and strength with endurance. Characteristics include a short, shiny and predominantly white coat . The tail is set high, may be short or long. Breeders often stop the tail a few days after birth, shortening it by about three fifths (in the third or fourth vertebra). The coat is short. The color is dominated by white. The head is glossy black and with shades of brown in the muzzle. There is also a white-brown with a tan and white-red color. Color options according to the standard are called “tricolor”, “chocolate” and “white-red”. Height at the withers ranges from 21.5 to 29.2 cm, weight - from 1.5 to 3.5 kg. The breed is much like a miniature fox terrier.

Temperament

Toy fox terriers are characterized by character traits of both decorative dogs and terriers. The breed has a penetrating mind, shows courage, energetic and decisive. Due to its origin, including from small breeds of dogs, its small size and devotion to its owners are characteristic. These dogs are attentive and adapt to almost any situation, quickly learn new teams, they are not easy to intimidate.

Toy Fox Terrier is a companion dog. It is very suitable for older people, since caring for it is simple, wool does not require additional attention and time [4] . Representatives of this breed are not inclined to bark very loudly if taught [5] .

The toy fox terrier is sensitive to cold, so care must be taken that the dog does not get too cold. Careful acclimatization is recommended [6] . It is important to choose the right diet, as the breed is prone to allergies , which can cause, for example, beets, corn, wheat, as well as insect bites [7] .

Among inherited diseases, hypothyroidism , T-cell defect (increased susceptibility to infections, especially viral), dislocation of the atlanto-axial joint (result of displacement or separation of the spinal column between the atlas and axial vertebra), narrow - angle glaucoma , persistent lens dislocation, persistent, are possible. pupillary membrane (mesodermal dysgenesis), trichiasis (abnormal arrangement of eyelashes on the eyelids) [8] . Sometimes they can suffer from Perthes disease, von Willebrand disease , dislocation of the patella, demodecosis . Life expectancy is approximately 13-14 years with proper care [9] .

Maintenance and care

The toy-fox terrier does not require special care; sometimes it is enough to clean and comb the hair. For him, long mobile walks are important [10] . If it is raining or very cold outside, walking is not advisable for a long time. Some breeders buy special winter coats for their pets to prevent the dog from freezing. The food is unpretentious, eats a little.

To prevent the formation of tartar , which can lead to periodontal disease , it is recommended that you give the Fox Terrier a dent bone or chewing toys. It is also important to brush your dog regularly.

This breed of dog needs early socialization. It is important from childhood to show the pet without rudeness and strength who is the leader in the family, then the dog will learn to observe the necessary rules of behavior [10] .
