Background

In 1897, according to Article 4 of the Addis Ababa Treaty , a convention was signed in Addis Ababa, which should define a new border between Ethiopia and Italian Eritrea. It provided for the joining of four districts ( Addi-Kaye , Addi-Ugri , Serae , Akele-Guzai ) to Ethiopia, protruding into the central part of Eritrea and strategically important. The Italian government refused to ratify this convention (it was not even published), a new round of Italian-Ethiopian border negotiations began. Finally, after three years, the Italian and Ethiopian governments came to an understanding and concluded a treaty close to Italian conditions [1] .

Conclusion of the contract and its conditions

The new Italo-Ethiopian border agreement between the two countries was signed by Ethiopian Negus Menelik II and the Italian Commissioner of Chiccodicola on July 10, 1900 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Ethiopia relinquished ownership of these four constituencies and future claims. The Ethiopian-Eritrean border along the Mareb, Beleza and Moon rivers, established by the Addis Ababa Treaty as temporary, was recognized as permanent (Article 1 of the treaty) [1] .

Consequences

Subsequently, the London agreement of Italy with six other great powers with their interests in this region, Great Britain and France, concluded six years later, cast doubt on the implementation of this treaty, which fixed the permanent borders and independence of Ethiopia [1] . However, the border established by the 1900 treaty remains unchanged even now [2] .
