Story

Inuyashiki Itiro is an ordinary, elderly office clerk and an exemplary family man. However, family members did not seem to notice him; children were ashamed of his poverty by the standards of the middle class. Therefore, the old man suffers from loneliness. Once, while walking in a park, an alien ship accidentally destroys him and another young man, but in order not to leave his tracks, the ship creates two cyborgs in place, possessing the appearance and memory of those killed. The new Inuyasiki gradually learns to control his new body and decides to save the victims of attacks and sick people. However, another newly-made cyborg - Hiro Shishigami, on the contrary, begins to kill people for sake of personal pleasure, wreak havoc, and then decides to destroy the entire population of Japan. Inuyasiki is the only one who can stop a new threat.

Characters

Itiro Inuyashiki ( Japanese 犬 屋 敷 壱 郎 Inuyashiki Itiroː )
Seiyu: Fumiyo Kohinata [2]
The protagonist of the story is a 50-year-old man who, however, looks older than his age. He works as an office clerk and modestly earns. Modest and quiet, being a man was cowardly and could not give back. Despite the fact that he has a car, a family and a new home, he is unhappy because his wife constantly condemns her husband, her daughter ignores his father, and his son is ashamed of him. When he found out that he had stomach cancer of the last stage, he did not inform his family, not knowing whether they would be saddened at all by such news. Outpouring his feelings in the park at night, he was accidentally destroyed by an alien ship, which immediately created a cybernetic copy of Inuyasiki with his memory. The new Inuyashiki gradually began to study its strength, but much more slowly than Shishigami because of its pacifist nature, but always sought to use it for the benefit of people, saving victims of violence or healing patients. Helping others, Inuyasiki at that moment "could feel alive." Later, he, along with Naoki, decides to fight against the Shishigami to stop his atrocities.
Hiro Shishigami ( Jap. 獅子 神 皓 Shishigami Hiro )
Seiyu: Nijiro Murakami [2]
The second main character of the story. A young man who along with Inuyasiki became a cyborg for the same reasons. A mentally unhealthy and infantile young man, the exact opposite of Inuyasika, with his new strength he begins to brutally kill people, not even sparing the children, since “he kills, feels alive,” before killing, he loves to watch the victim’s agony and listen to prayers for mercy. Shishigami does not follow any plans, and his decision to kill someone is a spontaneous whim, or a "game." His psyche could be negatively affected by the fact of the divorce of his mother and father. While still a man, he showed sadistic tendencies towards animals. When the public found out that Sishigami was to blame for the massacres, he began to take offense at the police and society, still not fully realizing that he himself was to blame for such events. At the same time, Shishigami has people to whom he is attached, for example, his mother, or later Shion and wanting to protect them, he temporarily refused to kill people and even agreed to heal. However, after the suicide of his mother (after she found out that her son was a murderer), and the siege by the police, he finally got angry at society and decided to kill the entire population of Japan. When he learns about Inuyasiki, he is furious that someone dares to "break his game." I agreed to sacrifice myself, destroying the meteorite, since the people dear to him (Naoyuki and Zion) remained on the ground.
Naoyuki Ando ( 安 堂 直行 Andoː Naoyuki )
Seiyu: Kanata Hongo [3]
A former friend of Shishigami, the first to know about his new abilities. Shishigami did not even begin to hide the fact that he was using his power for evil. After Shishigami killed Naoyuki's offenders, the second, completely frightened, asked him not to talk to him anymore. Soon Naoyuki met Inuyashiki, knowing that he was a cyborg and began to admire his deeds. He helped Inuyashiki master his strength based on what he saw with Shishigami. When Shishigami found out that Naoyuki was acting against him, he did not kill him, as he still cherished him as a friend.
Mari Inuyasiki ( Japanese 犬 屋 敷 麻 理 Inuyasiki ari )
Seiyu: Sumire Uesaka [4]
The daughter of Inuyasiki. The arrogant and sharp girl who in recent years completely ignored her father is popular at school. She dreams of becoming a mangaka and wants to send her work to the Jump contest. When she found out that her father is a cyborg who saves lives, she dramatically changed her mind about him. I almost died from carbon monoxide poisoning due to a fire that arose from a plane crashing into the building, shot down by Sisigami. However, Inuyasiki managed to reanimate her.
Zion Watanabe ( 渡 辺 し お ん Watanabe Zion )
Seiyu: Sumire Morohoshi [4]
A former classmate of Shishigami, whose parents died when she was little. Fell in love with him when she saw how he stood up for his friend. Later, when the young man was hiding from the police, sheltered him in his apartment, in which she lived with her grandmother, while denying the fact that he was a murderer. Shishigami intended to kill Zion by dropping her from a bird's-eye view, but the girl begged him to stay with her. The guy, touched by her words, fell in love with the girl and even agreed not to kill people anymore, but to treat them. However, when the police uncovered the Shishigami shelter, soldiers at the same time shot Zion and her grandmother. And although Sishigami cured them, it prompted him to start killing again, but out of revenge. Zion settled with her grandmother in another apartment. Shishigami continued to send her money, and even after the "destruction of Japan" offered to live abroad, but the girl, disappointed that he began to kill again, refused to take the money and asked her never to appear before her eyes again.

The third volume took 15th place and as of March 1, 2015, 74,974 copies of it were sold [13] . Due to the low sales of manga, Oku, the author of the work decides to end the story on volume 10 [14] [15] .

Inuyashiki became one of the works that the jury selected at the 18th Japan Media Arts Festival [16] , also the manga was nominated for the best comic strip, at the 44th prairie ceremony of the International Comic Festival in Angouleme [17] .

Criticism

Toshi Nakamura from the Kotaku website noted the similarity of the plot formula to the Gantz manga, an early work by Hiroi Oku, in particular the protagonist spending his weekdays. It turns out that he is in a strange situation for himself, he must immediately master new rules and strategies for survival. The main character is a good character, it’s nice to watch him bravely deal with thugs. Manga immerses the reader in exciting events and storyfights, while maintaining a secret around what is happening. Although some storylines last painfully long. Gantz also suffered from the same sins [18] .
