Biography
Born in the family of a sea captain.
Interest in Oriental languages in Daniel was aroused by a mother who spoke Turkish.
After the death of his father, the family was left without a livelihood, and Daniel, a 5th grade gymnasium student in the Kerch gymnasium, was forced to earn private lessons.
In 1908, after graduating from high school, he entered the Faculty of Oriental Languages at St. Petersburg University. His teachers at the university were N. A. Mednikov , A... Schmidt, I. Yu. Krachkovsky, and A. F. Khashab [1] . Student underwent language practice in 1910 and 1911 in Beirut .
In 1912, the university was graduated in the Arab-Persian-Turkish-Tatar rank. Daniel was sent to work in the East as a teacher at the Palestinian Society Teachers' Seminary in Nazareth . In 1914, the seminaries of the Palestinian Society were closed and Daniel returned to his homeland.
In St. Petersburg, he got a job in the economic department of the CHX, then worked at the Petrograd Trade Customs. In 1919, for health reasons, he was forced to leave for Tver. He lived there for three years, worked as the head of the information bureau of the statistical and economic department, an inspector of the RKK of the Upper Volga Water Transport Administration, and lectured in Russian language and literature at the Tver University of Proletarian Culture.
After the opening of the Institute of Living Oriental Languages in Petrograd, in 1922, he got a job as a teacher, associate professor of the Arabic language and literature department. At the same time he taught at the Leningrad State University , at the Leningrad Institute of History, Philosophy and Linguistics (LIFLI) (later he became a member of the Faculty of Philology of Leningrad University). Since 1934 he worked in the Arabic office of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
During the years of World War II, in July 1942, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences was evacuated. In Leningrad, 5 people remained to protect the property, handwritten and book treasures of the institute. The scientific secretary D.V. Semenov, appointed by the authorized representative for the Institute, supervised the work of protecting the building of the Institute and its archive. Deprivations of the siege of life undermined the health of Daniil Vladimirovich. May 7, 1943 died suddenly.
Family
He was married, had two sons. Both died during the war on the outskirts of Leningrad, died the death of the brave.
Creativity
While working at the Institute of Oriental Languages, Daniil Vladimirovich Semenov, prepared and published books: “A reader of the spoken Arabic language (Syriac dialect) and a dictionary for it” (1929), “The experience of comparing one Arabic folk tale with well-known Russian” (1930), managed to prepare to the publication, the article “The Views of French Scientists on the Present Position of the Arabic Language and Its Future” (published in 1937) and others. “The Reading Book of Spoken Arabic” became the first such anthology in Russia.
In 1935, academician I. Yu. Krachkovsky, by the totality of the work of D. Semenov, introduced the scientist to the award of the degree of candidate of linguistics. In December 1935 he became a candidate of sciences, associate professor of the Arabic language at Leningrad State University. In 1938 he was appointed and. about. in 1940, the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences approved the scientist as a senior researcher at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
Before the war, Daniil Vladimirovich prepared for defense a doctoral dissertation on the topic: “The Syntax of the Modern Arabic Literary Language”. A monograph on this subject was published in 1941. Further plans of the scientist were not destined to materialize.
