Big Lake (Texas)

Big Lake ( English Big Lake ) - a city in the United States , located in the western part of Texas , the administrative center of Reagan County . According to the 2010 census, the number of inhabitants was 2,936; according to the US Census Bureau in 2016, 3,152 people lived in the city [2] .

History

At the beginning of the 20th century, the lands around Big Lake were occupied by two families, Coates and Taylor. In 1911, Taylor sold 320 acres of land to the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway of Texas to build the site and create the city. Soon, shops appeared in the city, a telephone line was drawn from Styles, and a public school was opened. In 1912, a railway was built in Big Lake, and a post office was opened [3] .

On May 28, 1923, oil was discovered in Reagan County, not far from Big Lake. On August 15 of the same year, the city received a charter, the formation of local government began. In 1925, Big Lake became the largest city and was elected the administrative center of Reagan County [3] .

Big Lake is located in the southern part of the county, with coordinates: [4] .

According to the US Census Bureau , the area of ​​the city is about 3.5 km 2 , fully occupied by land [4] .

Climate

According to the Köppen climate classification , the semi-arid climate of low latitudes (BSk) prevails in Big Lake [5] .

According to the 2010 census, 2,936 people lived in the city, there were 981 households and 774 families. The racial makeup of the city: 76.7% are white , 2.2% are African Americans , 0.6% are Native Americans, 0.2% are Asians , 0% (0 people) are residents of Hawaii or Oceania, 18.4% - other races, 1.9% - two or more races. The number of Hispanic residents of any race was 62.4% [8] .

Out of 981 households, children under 18 live in 43.4%. 62.4% of households were married couples (29% with children under 18 years of age), in 9.9% of households women lived without husbands, in 6.6% of households men lived without wives, 21.1% of households were not by families. Only one person lived in 17.9% of households, 6.8% were single elderly people (over 65). The average household size was 2.97 people. The average family size is 3.36 people [8] .

The population of the city by age range was distributed as follows: 33.7% are residents under the age of 20, 25.2% are between the ages of 20 and 39, 31.2% are between 40 and 64, 9.9% are 65 and older . The average age is 32.5 years [8] .

According to surveys of five years from 2012 to 2016, the average household income in Big Lake is $ 58,649 per year, and the average family income is $ 61,619. The per capita income for the city is $ 23,478. About 15.1% of families and 19.9% ​​of the population are below the poverty line. Including 31.8% of those under the age of 18 years and 3.4% of those aged 65 and over [9] .

Local government

The city is managed by the mayor and the city council, consisting of five people, one of whom is appointed deputy mayor. All members of the city council are elected for a term of two years [10] .

Infrastructure and transport

The main highways passing through Big Lake are:

  •   US 67 motorway runs east from Merzon west to Rankin .
  •   Texas State Highway 137 runs from north Stanton to the southeast to the intersection with US 163 near Ozone .

The city has Reagan County Airport. The airport has two runways 1229 and 1055 meters long, respectively [11] . The closest airport for commercial flights is the San Angelo Regional Airport. The airport is located about 115 kilometers east of Big Lake.

Education

The city is served by the Reagan Independent School District.
