January
- January 1 - Beginning of mandatory use by all medical institutions and pharmacies of the e-health system (e-health). From now on, sick leave and prescriptions for state-compensated medicines are prescribed and used only in electronic form in the e-health system [2] [3] .
- January 18 - In the Saeima, a vote was taken on the recall of the chairman of the party “ From the Heart - Latvia ” Inguna Sudraba from the parliamentary commission investigating the “case of the oligarchs”, initiated by two parties of the ruling coalition: Unity and the National Association . The proposal was not supported by the Sejm: the “ Consent ” faction voted “against”, and the deputies of another ruling party of the SZK and a number of extra-factional deputies abstained from the vote [4] [5] .
- January 23 - The Government of Latvia approved amendments to the law on education, according to which the role of the Latvian language in school education will be increased, including in schools of national minorities, including the full translation of instruction in secondary schools (grades 10-12) into Latvian by 2021 / 2022 academic year [6] [7] .
- January 26 :
- In the Skrunda region , a new fire and rescue service depot was solemnly commissioned - the first fire station built in Kurzeme since the country's independence , and the sixth similar station in modern Latvia, built from scratch. The previous fire station in Skrunda was built in 1936, but in 2011 it fell apart, after which firefighters were in temporary premises. The state police station [8] [9] will also be located in the new depot.
- Two deputies of the Sejm left the Unity faction after the decision of this party to support the recall of the chairman, From the Heart - Latvia , Inguna Sudraba from the parliamentary commission investigating the "case of the oligarchs" [10] . As a result, the Unity faction now has twenty deputies in the Sejm, giving way to the second largest faction of the Union of Greens and Peasants , which consists of twenty-one deputies [11] .
- January 27-28 - The European Luge Championship was held on the track in Sigulda , combined with the ninth stage of the Luge World Cup [12] .
February
- February 1 - The Saeima of Latvia adopted amendments to the Law on Public Procurement, according to which enterprises registered in low-tax countries ( offshore ), as well as companies more than 25% of the shares of which belong to enterprises registered in offshore, will not be able to participate in procurement [13 ] [14] .
- February 5 - The Minister of Finance of Latvia, Dana Reizniece-Ozola, said that the Ministry of Finance, after analyzing the amendments to the Law on Public Procurement, came to the conclusion that they do not comply with international standards: restricting the right to participate in procurement only on the basis of the country of registration of the company is unlawful and may be disputed in the courts [15] .
- February 9 - Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis returned to the Sejm amendments to the Public Procurement Law, urging them to finalize them and bring them into line with EU legal acts . This is the seventh law that the president refused to proclaim for less than three years of his term (since the summer of 2015). The President called on the Seimas to fix the systemic problem of making hasty and ill-considered decisions and noted the need to change the rules of the Seimas [16] [17] .
- February 9-11 - The Twentieth International Ice Sculpture Festival was held in Jelgava [18] [19] .
- February 17 - President of the Bank of Latvia Ilmar Rimsevic was questioned by the Bureau for the Prevention and Combating of Corruption on suspicion of extorting bribes in the amount of more than one hundred thousand euros. A day earlier, a search was conducted at the place of work and residence of the head of the Bank of Latvia. On February 19, Ilmar Rimsevic was released on bail , he is forbidden to travel outside Latvia and fulfill the duties of the President of the Bank of Latvia [20] [21] [22] .
- February 19 - Latvia received the first medal at the XXIII Winter Olympic Games : bobsledders Oscar Melbardis and Janis Strenga took third place [23] .
- February 24 - At the selection of Latvian representative to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest was defeated by Laura Rizzotto with the song “ Funny Girl ” " [24] .
March
- March 10 - The Director General of the State Revenue Service of Latvia, Ilze Cirule, was found dead in her own house [25] [26] . The acting general director of the SRS has been appointed the deputy general director of the SRS, Dace Peleka [27] .
- March 15th :
- Jurmala City Council decided that from June 1, 2018, public transport will be free for all residents of the city. Previously, only schoolchildren and pensioners living in Jurmala could use the city’s public transport for free [28] [29] .
- The Saeima of Latvia refused to support the proposal of the “ National Association ” on recognizing March 16 as an official day in memory of Latvian soldiers [30] [31] . At the same time, in the first reading, a bill was approved, initiated by the Unity party, on giving November 11 the status of an official holiday and weekend [30] .
- March 24 - The Latvian Seimas adopted in the third reading amendments to the law on education, reflecting the government proposal put forward in January this year to gradually increase the role of the Latvian language in the learning process in primary and secondary schools. As a result of the reform, by the academic year 2021/2022, 80% of students in the main schools from the seventh grade should be taught in the Latvian language, and in secondary schools all in the Latvian language. In the languages of national minorities it will be possible to study the native language, literature and subjects related to national culture and history [32] [33] .
- March 26 - Latvia notified the Russian Embassy of the expulsion of one of the diplomats and a representative of Aeroflot in Latvia in connection with the Skripal Case [34] [35] .
- March 30 - In response to the expulsion of a representative of her embassy from Latvia, Russia obliged one of the employees of the Latvian embassy to leave the territory of the Russian Federation [36] .
- March 31 - The All-Latvia Parents' Meeting was held against a new stage of school reform , limiting education in schools in Russian [37] .
April
April 26 - The Sejm approved amendments to the law on pensions, providing for the payment of a widow's allowance in the amount of 50% of the pension of the deceased spouse in the first year after his death to the surviving spouse on January 1, 2019 [38] .
