Eduard Kukan ( Slovak. Eduard Kukan , born December 26, 1939 ) is a Slovak politician, Slovak Foreign Minister (1998 - 2006) [1] . He ran for the presidential election on April 3, 2004, ranked third after the ex-Prime Minister Vladimir Mekyar and Ivan Gasparovic , thereby preventing the election from being challenged. In 1999, Kukan was appointed United Nations Special Envoy for Kosovo. He occupied this position with Carl Bildt [2] .

Biography
Edward Kukan was born on December 26, 1939 in the Shalya region, Slovakia.
Education
In 1964, Kukan graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations , where he studied Swahili . Later he studied at the Law Faculty of Charles University in Prague. Received a doctorate degree in law.
Diplomatic career
At various times, Eduard Kukan worked in positions in state institutions:
- Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Czechoslovakia in Prague (from August 1, 1964)
- Employee at the Headquarters Department of Black Africa (1964-1968)
- Secretariat Officer for Foreign Affairs (1973-1977)
- Director of the Department of Black Africa (1981-1985)
- Director of the Department of Latin America (1988-1990)
- Czechoslovak Embassy in Lusaka (1968-1973)
- Czechoslovak Embassy in Washington, Minister-Counselor and Deputy Ambassador (1977-1981)
- Czechoslovak Embassy in Addis Ababa as Ambassador (1985-1988)
- Permanent Representative of Czechoslovakia to the UN in New York (1991)
- Permanent Representative of Slovakia to the UN (1993)
- Chairman of the Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs at the UN
- Special Envoy in the Balkans (1991-2001)
- Slovak Foreign Minister (March 1994 - December 1994)
- Slovak Foreign Minister (October 1998 - 2006)
- Special Envoy in the Balkans (1991-2001)
Since 2009, Kukan has been a member of the European Parliament . In the parliamentary election campaign, he headed the list of center-right candidates - the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union-Democratic Party (SDKÚ) [3] .
In parliament, Kukan works in the Foreign Affairs Committee. In addition, in 2009 - 2014 he was a member of the subcommittee on human rights. In 2014, Kukan joined the Subcommittee on Security and Defense.
In 2016, Kukan was an observer at the general election in Uganda [4] .
Personal life
Kukan is married and has two adult children. He is fluent in Swahili , English, Russian and Spanish.
