Sykes, William Russell

William Russell (Bill) Sykes ( October 13, 1927 - January 5, 2018 ) is an English and New Zealand botanist , a specialist in the flora of Oceania.

Biography

Born in the village of Walsham-le-Willows in the county of Suffolk in eastern England. For some time he worked in the nursery of Thompson & Morgan , then served as a medical technician in the British Navy . Since 1949 - in the garden of the Royal Horticultural Society in Weasley . In 1953 he received a diploma of a gardener.

In 1952 he went to the Himalayan region, being hired by the British Museum , but due to his illness he was forced to return in 1954.

Since 1957, Sykes studied at Chelsea College, University of London , graduated in 1960.

In 1961, he and his wife Elizabeth Brown Sykes emigrated to New Zealand, becoming an employee of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. In 1964 he visited the Kermadek Islands as part of an expedition of the Royal Ornithological Society of New Zealand, which, however, was forced to return only two days after arriving on the islands due to the start of the volcanic eruption. In 1966, Sykes spent ten weeks exploring the flora of the Kermadek archipelago.

In the 1970s, he actively traveled to the islands of Cook , Tonga , Niue . In 1988, he studied conifers of Guangxi and the Russian Far East . In 1992 he traveled to French Polynesia .

In 2005, Sykes became an officer in the New Zealand Order of Merit . In 2017, he was elected a foreign member of the Linnaeus Society of London .

Died January 5, 2018 .
