Biography

Born in Pretoria in 1925. He studied at the University of Pretoria , graduated with honors, then received a master's degree there.

In 1948 - as part of the Scientific and Industrial Research Service, then, becoming the owner of the scholarship of the Netherlands-South African Society, went to the University of Leiden to prepare a thesis. In 1949 he became a doctoral student in chemistry under the guidance of Albert Jan Kleiver . In 1952 he defended his doctoral thesis at the Delft Technical University on the topic "On the yeast fungus Candida pulcherrima and its pigment."

Returning to South Africa, van der Valt continued his work in the Scientific and Industrial Research Service, initiated the first microbiological study of South African beer based on sorghum . Since 1957 - in Stellenbosch . In 1961 he headed the microbiological research group of the Scientific and Industrial Research Service, from 1963 to 1967 he led her program to research mycotoxins .

In 1976, van der Valt and V. K. Hops-Havu proposed to establish the ascomycete or basidiomycete affinity of yeast fungi with an unknown sexual process, the DBB test - diazonium blue B staining. Cells of fungi with basidiomycete affinity are stained red-brown under its action.

Member of the South African Royal Society. In 1980 he was a member of the Special Committee on Mushrooms and Lichens of the International Plant Taxonomy Association .

After leaving the Service of Scientific and Industrial Research in 1988, van der Valt transferred his richest collection of yeast cultures to the Free State University in Bloemfontein . Since 1993 he was an extraordinary professor at the University of Free State. In 1994, van der Valtu was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Free State.

Author of several sections of the 2nd and 3rd editions of The Yeasts: A Taxonomic Study (1970, 1984).

He died on November 13, 2011 .
