It is located on the right bank of the Du River at a distance of about 350 km south-east of Paris and 29 km north-east of Besançon , the administrative center of the Du department and the Franche-Comté region .

In 2015, the population was 5,291 inhabitants.

At the site of Bom-les-Dame already in Roman times there was a settlement, which was called Balma. Later, an abbey was founded here by the bishop of Besança, in which there were about 400 nuns. The abbey became the spiritual center of the region, where mostly girls from noble families were admitted. Over time, the name Baume-les-Nonnes , later renamed Baume-les-Dames, appeared .

During the reign of Frederick I Barbarossa in 1153, Bom-les-Dame was walled and received city rights.

The historic center is quite compact, with several old mansions and churches.
