Biography
Shlomo Molla was born in a small Jewish village of 40 families in the Gondar province of Ethiopia in 1965 in a family with 9 brothers and 2 sisters. Molla attempted to immigrate to Israel in 1984 on foot after being overlooked by Operation Moses and Operation Yehoshua . He was saved by the Israeli military in Sudan; during his trip to Sudan, one of the Ethiopian Jews traveling with him was shot dead by the Sudanese military. Upon reaching Israel, Shlomo was sent to the Immigrant Naturalization Center in Safed . Having malaria upon arrival in Israel, he studied Hebrew in a hospital. After serving in the Israel Defense Forces, he studied for a bachelor of social work at Bar-Ilan University . During his studies, he was co-chair of the organization of Ethiopian students. Later, Shlomo also received an LLB ( Bachelor of Law ) from Ono Academy College.
In 1991, Molla headed the Jewish Agency’s Immigrant Naturalization Center in Tiberias , and in 1995 was appointed head of naturalization centers and ulpans in northern kibbutzim . In 1996, he became a member of a committee of the Ministry of Health to advise on the conditions of the war, and in 1999 he headed the Ethiopian section of the Jewish Agency . In the same year, Molla won eighth place in the Knesset on the list of Israel ba Aliyah [4] , but the party received only six seats.
In 2006, he was a member of the board and head of the department of the World Zionist Organization . Prior to the 2006 election, he was nominated thirty-third on the Kadima list. However, after the resignation of Avigdor Yitzhaki in February 2008, Molla became the second member of the Knesset of Ethiopian descent (after Adisu Massala) [5] . He was placed nineteenth on the Kadima party list in the 2009 elections and retained his seat as the party received 28 seats.
In 2012, Molla left Kadima to join the new Ha-Tnua party. Having taken eighth place on the party’s list in the 2013 elections [6] , he did not return to the Knesset because the party received only six seats.
In 2015, he called on Ethiopian Israelis to refuse to pay taxes or to serve in the Israeli armed forces in protest against acts of racism directed against Ethiopian Israelis, such as the police attack on Demas Fikadey [7] .
Personal life
Molla is married, has three children and lives in Rishon Lezion .
