Biography

Born into a theater-related family, his mother was an outstanding Spanish actress. Hence his passion for the scene and his acquaintance with her. He studied at the Institute of San Isidro. He was the director of the national library.

I tried to stand out of politics, while absorbing the best Spanish forces. During the tense struggle of the Conservatives with the Liberals ( Glorious Revolution (Spain) ) M. Tamayo-i Baus, at the turn of several literary schools: the romantic , classical French and Spanish Golden Age, linked his fate with the feudal-church circles, despite the theoretical sympathy for the positions of the French realistic school.

Creativity

His first plays are an imitation of Schiller and German romantics. Later - imitated Racine and Alfieri .

He performed with romantic historical dramas " Jeanne d'Arc " (1847, freestyle "The Orleans Maiden" by F. Schiller), "August 5" (1849), "Virginia" (1853), "The Adventures of Richelieu", "Andreno". Inspired by the example of A. Dumas-father, he processed plots from national history and achieved success with the productions of “Noble Woman” (La rica hembra, 1854) and “Madness from Love” (Locura de amor, 1855).

The principles of the realistic drama M. Tamayo-i-Bausa outlined in his speech “On truth as the source of beauty in dramatic literature” (1859).

He published a realistic psychological drama on the historical plot “Madness from Love” (1855, Russian translation, 1875), plays on contemporary morals “Snowball” (1856), “A Matter of Honor” (1863), a psychological play from the time of William Shakespeare “ A new drama ”(1867, Russian translation. 1919) and others. In the comedy“ Decent People ”(1870) he criticized bourgeois reality from a conservative position.

The last period of his dramatic creativity is marked by the influence of Shakespeare , Lope de Vega and Calderon . The tragedy of his "Virgil" was especially successful.

M. Tamayo-and-Bausa's masterpiece is considered to be “New Drama” - a beautifully conceived and executed work, breathing with feeling and truthfulness. The play was a great success in Spain. After the play “Los hombres de bien”, which was Catholic in spirit and displeased the critics and the public, the playwright ceased his creative activity.
