List of winners of the 1956 Winter Olympics

Austrian skier Tony Sailer with three gold award games of 1956

Below is a list of all the winners of the 1956 Winter Olympics , held in the Italian city of Cortina d'Ampezzo from January 26 to February 5, 1956. In total, 821 athletes took part in the competition - 687 men and 134 women, representing 32 countries ( national Olympic committees ). 24 sets of awards were won in 8 disciplines of 4 Olympic sports [1] - men competed in 17 types of game programs, women in 6, and mixed pairs competed in one form. In bobsled , skiing , ski jumping , ice skating and hockey, only men played medals, and figure skating was the only sport at this Winter Olympics, where men and women competed in pairs. Compared to the 1952 games , in Oslo, the Olympic program decreased by one discipline - the men's ski race of 18 kilometers, and increased by three new ones - the men's ski race of 15 and 30 kilometers, as well as the women's ski relay race of 3 to 5 kilometers [2 ] . In anticipation of the games, the USSR Olympic Committee came up with the initiative to include women in speed skating in the Olympic program, but this initiative was not accepted at the 49th IOC Session in Athens in 1954 [3] . Women's speed skating competitions will be included in the program of the Olympic Games starting in 1960 [4] .

131 athletes from 13 countries became winners of the games in Cortina d'Ampezzo , while athletes from nine countries managed to win at least one gold medal [5] . The first place in the medal standings of the games with 16 medals, 7 of which were gold, was taken by the USSR national team , which first participated in the Winter Olympic Games and consisted of 53 athletes. The second place in the medal standings was taken by the Austrian national team with 11 awards, and the Finnish national team with 7 medals took the third place. The hosts of the games - Italian athletes have won three Olympic medals.
