Biography
Born in the city of Al-Baida in the family of Senusia. His father Muhammad ibn Ali al-Sanusi was the founder of the religious and political order of the Senusites [1] . After the death of his father in 1859, he became the leader of the Sufi order of the Senusites. Muhammad al-Mahdi was able to extend the influence of the tariqa of senusia to a significant part of Central and North Africa . He took an active part in the anti-colonial struggle with the French colonialists. In 1890, his son Muhammad Idris al-Sanusi was born, the future and only king of Libya. In 1895, the Ottomans ousted the Senusites from Zawiya Jagbub [2] and their center moved south to the oasis of Kufra . After his death, his nephew Ahmed al-Sheriff became the leader of the Senusites [3] .
