Lea Pericoli ( Italian: Lea Pericoli ; born March 22, 1935 , Milan ) is a former Italian tennis player whose career lasted over 20 years. Subsequently, a TV presenter and journalist. In addition to sports achievements, it was considered an icon of tennis style of the 60s [1] [2] [3] .

Biography
Early life
Lea spent her childhood in Addis Ababa. She has a brother and two sisters. During World War II, the family moved to Asmara. Lea attended a monastery school in Nairobi (Kenya). At seventeen, she returned to Italy.
Career
Perikoli three times reached the 1/16 finals of the Wimbledon tournament - in 1965, 1967 and 1970.
In partnership with Helga Schulze, Perikoli won the doubles title in 1974 at the WTA Swiss Open, defeating Kayoko Fukuoku and Michelle Rodriguez 6-2, 6-0 in the final.
For the national team, Lea made her debut in the Federation Cup in 1963 and represented Italy in nine tournaments, winning 8 of 16 singles matches and 7 of 14 paired matches. Her last match in the Federation Cup was in 1975.
A pair of Lea Pericoli and Sylvanas Lazzarino (born 1933) was considered one of the strongest in Italian tennis, reaching the final of the national championship six times in a row.
In 2015, she was included in the Italian Sports Hall of Fame [4] [5] .
Style Icon
In 1955, Pericoli played at Wimbledon in clothing designed by Ted Tinling [6] [7] . Her sportswear on the court has always aroused great interest among spectators and journalists. In 1964, in a dress with a tutu skirt, she became one of the most discussed participants in the tournament, reaching only the third round of competitions [2] . For several years she had a contract with the Italian sportswear brand Superga [1] .
In 2001, the British tabloid Sunday Mirror quoted Pericoli: “I became famous thanks to my clothes and not my game” and “I didn’t make money in tennis, but if I were born 30 years later, I would become terribly rich, like Anna Kournikova ” [8] .
Journalist
On June 24, 1974, Leah made her debut as a journalist in the il Giornale newspaper. Her professional training was carried out by Indro Montanelli [1] . She is known as a tennis and fashion journalist, as well as a sports commentator. [9] [10] In 2009, her autobiographical book Maldafrica [11] was published.
Personal life
On November 12, 1964, Lea Pericoli married Tito Fontana [12] [13] .
