We want to make a game that is not embarrassing for adult men to discuss loudly in a bar. Men can discuss fighters, weapons, tactics. But hardly fairies with luminous wings. Aggression is organically inherent in people, especially men. Without aggression you will not become either a defender or a prey - you will not expel a saber-toothed tiger from a cave and you will not get a mammoth to feed a tribe. Nowadays, the demand for aggression is less, so you need to pour out excess energy - in sports and computer games. - Creative producer of the project "Caliber" Albert Zhiltsov [2] |
"Caliber" is a joint project of the developer 1C Game Studios and the publishing division of the Wargaming Alliance . The game is created on the Unity graphics engine. The announcement of Caliber took place on December 17, 2016 at the WG Fest - Wargaming festival of game lovers in Moscow [3] . Alpha testing of Caliber began at the end of 2017, and closed beta testing is scheduled for the first half of 2019.
The developers of "Caliber" collaborate with the arms concerns " Kalashnikov " [4] and Lobaev Arms , which have given official permission to present their products in the game. The game already contains AK-74M, AKS-74U, AKM, PKP, RPK-74, PP-19 Vityaz, PB, PM, PYa, PL-15, SVD, SVD-S, GP-25; the developers intend to add RPK-16, AK-12, Saigu, SV-98, AM-17, AMB-17 and other models [5] .
Caliber ”- about the team and about friendship,” says Zhiltsov. - Take your friends with you, go through several levels - and your friendship will become stronger. Mission can only be won together. While the medic is alive, everything is fine. The whole team must take care that he is alive. And he - so that the team was alive. - Creative producer of the project "Caliber" Albert Zhiltsov [2] |
The developers in the creation of "Caliber" are guided by a male audience, when you can immerse yourself in an authentic special forces game, feel the support of the group and feel like good guys. The game is not positioned as a simulator, orientation focuses on attention and respect for details, realistic images of fighters, but after creating this model, realism ends. The creators are trying to delve into hyperrealism, paying great attention to detail. So, in “Caliber” there are four types of operative fighters: attack aircraft, machine gunner, sniper and medic. The designers set a difficult task: to make each set (“collection”) in one style, but at the same time, the features should be clearly expressed, with which the player could quickly determine: what type of fighter is in front of him and from which unit [2] .
In order to understand the specifics of the special forces, what is essential in it and what elements of tactics can be replaced by conventions, the developers talked with operatives from special forces. In this process, they understood and formalized a key rule: "Special Forces - this is primarily a team." And further, if most shooters are built on attention to one superhero player, then it is impossible to win alone in Caliber: to shoot opponents, comfortably sitting down with a sniper rifle in shelter, will fail [2] .
Gameplay
The developers of "Caliber" focus on teamwork and tactical component [6] . A wide-view gaming camera located behind the character helps to monitor the development of a tactical situation.
The game will have two main modes: PvP and PvE. In both modes, players become members of a team of 4 special forces operatives. The victory condition is the complete destruction of the enemy or the capture of his base [7] .
Tactical Roles
Each team operative performs one of 4 tactical roles (classes), which differ from each other in armament and special abilities:
- attack aircraft - a fighter of an attacking plan, fighting at close and medium distances;
- support - a defensive fighter with heavy weapons, covering allies with fire;
- Medic - a support fighter, raising allies to their feet;
- sniper - a fighter of the attacking plan, hitting opponents from a long distance.
Each operative has a primary, secondary and special weapon, as well as 5 elements of equipment - a helmet, body armor, overalls, boots and gloves [8] .
Among the weapons and equipment available to fighters there will be edged weapons, mines and extensions, armored shields, drones and other special means.
Maps
Fights 4 on 4 or against artificial intelligence will take place on maps with a lot of obstacles and shelters. Destructibility of some objects on the maps is provided. The battle conditions will differ: in particular, the developers are going to implement night maps in Caliber. Maps will be fictional, but at the same time they will combine the characteristic elements of real locations typical of certain regions of the world. The first cards in the game will be in the setting of the Middle East.
Special Forces Collections
Field investigators will be part of collections based on real units of special forces from around the world. Moreover, the collections will differ not only externally, but also by the gameplay. Each fighter will have his own weapons and unique special ability, which will dictate certain tactics to him.
In the collections of special forces "Caliber" will be represented by operatives of various time periods from the late 1970s.
