Biography

Johnny Carlisle was born July 31, 1929 in the city of Falkirk , Scotland . He learned to skate in early childhood at a local ice rink, played hockey for the first time there, played for the reserve staff of the Falkirk Lions city hockey team.

At the age of seventeen, he made his debut at an adult level in the basic composition of “Lviv”. After serving in the army, he continued to play for the team, won the playoff series of the Scottish National League three times, remaining in the club until its disbandment in 1955. In total, he played 297 games for the club, gaining 190 points in them (he scored 74 goals and gave 116 assists). At the same time, for the first time began to be involved in the main part of the national team of Great Britain in hockey , in particular, visited the world championships of 1950 and 1951 , taking them fourth and fifth places respectively. At the same time, on the ice, he played the role of both an attacker and a defender .

He spent the 1955/56 season at the London-based Harringey Racers in the British National League. He became one of the main players in the team and was recognized as a captain during the season. After the Racers ceased to exist in 1958, Carlisle returned to Scotland and joined the Edinburgh Royals team. Nevertheless, this team was also short-lived, and by the end of the season the hockey player ended up in Nottingham Panthers . In connection with the crisis and the closure of the British National League, Panthers left the next season and from 1959 to 1962 represented the English team Brighton Tigers .

While still an active hockey player, Johnny Carlyle coached Edinburgh Royals, and in 1961 he headed the UK team as a playing coach - the team under his leadership defeated all of his rivals in Group B of the World Cup , losing only in Norway to the final table the difference in goals. The next season, he proved himself primarily at the club level, was the Brighton Tigers coach and player, after which he was invited to the post of head coach at the Scottish Murrayfield Racers club - he was in this position in 1967-1972, and he was four times recognized as the best coach of the league.

For the period 1971-1973, he again led the national team of Great Britain, who at that time played in Group C of the World Cup . Then he retired.

In 1988, Johnny Carlyle was inducted into the British Hockey Hall of Fame for his sporting achievements.

Died April 15, 2017 in the town of Larbert , Falkirk County at the age of 87 years [1] .
