Biography [1]
Born in the family of a businessman in Portsmouth , spent his childhood in London. In 1855-1859 he studied at Cambridge University . After working for two years as a school math teacher, Besant went to Mauritius and worked for six years as a professor of mathematics at Royal College. The deterioration of his health forced him to resign, and in 1867 he returned to England and settled in London. From 1868 to 1885 he served as secretary of the Palestine Exploration Fund .
In 1868, Besant published the book "Studies of French Poetry." Three years later, he began collaborating with writer James Rice . In particular, they co-wrote two plays, “Cash-Mortiboy” (Ready-money Mortiboy, 1872), and “The Golden Butterfly” (The Golden Butterfly, 1876), staging both plays was a success. Collective work ended with the death of Rice in 1882. Besant’s independent work turned out to be more fruitful. Among the numerous novels of Besant, four are distinguished: “Everything in the Garden Fair” ( All in a Garden Fair, 1883 ), “Dorothy Forster” ( Dorothy Forster, 1884 ), “Children of Gibeon” ( Children of Gibeon, 1886 ) and “People of All Sorts and living conditions ”( All sorts and conditions of men, 1882 ). In the last two, Besant tried to awaken public attention to the difficulties of the poorest sections of London. And he achieved concrete success by implementing the idea of creating the People's Palace in East London ( The People's Palace ). In addition to fiction, Besant wrote essays on the history and toponymy of 18th-century London.
Besant was a freemason, joining the Lodge of Harmony in Mauritius in 1862. In 1869, he joins the Dalhousie Lodge. In 1873, he became the Master of Marquis of Dalhousie Lodge . He was also the treasurer of the Atlantic Union, an association that sought to improve social relations between the British and Americans. Besant died in London on June 9, 1901 at the age of 64.
