A protrusion in the geopolitical sense is a part of a state or administrative-territorial unit that protrudes beyond the main border line of a territory.

The shape of the protrusion resembles the shape of the peninsula , but instead of water, on three sides the protrusion is surrounded by neighboring territorial units of the mainland .
