The son of a police commissioner. He was educated at the Jesuit College, at the age of 18 he entered the army service in artillery. Having demobilized, he began to work as a secretary in the Paris police station located near the Tower of Saint-Jacques , and in this capacity he had the opportunity to observe the life of the urban seabed close to him and study in detail the language and customs of the lower classes. In 1885 he made his debut novel “Flesh” ( fr. La Chair ), in 1887, the comedy Metenje “In the Family” ( fr. En famille ) was one of the first productions of the Free Theater . In 1889, Metenie resigned from the police and devoted himself entirely to literary work, actively cooperating with both theaters and magazines.
Literary specialty Metenie became a naturalistic depiction of the depths of the social bottom by the methods inherited by Emil Zola . He owns about two dozen plays staged in various theaters in Paris - the greatest resonance was caused by the drama “Mademoiselle Fifi” ( fr. Mademoiselle Fifi ; 1896, based on Guy de Maupassant ’s novel “ Pyshka ”), which told about the life of a prostitute and was banned for some time by the police. Metenje also co-authored Isaac Pavlovsky on the translation and scenic adaptation of Leo Tolstoy ’s drama The Power of Darkness (1888). As a prose writer Metenie wrote about three dozen fictional essays, as well as a brochure on the works of Aristide Bruand .
In 1897 Metenieu founded the famous Parisian Grand-Guinhol theater for the most consistent embodiment of his ideal of naturalism on the stage, but remained at the head of this project only during the first season, giving way to , who radically changed the direction of the theater.
