Ian Charlson ( born Ian Charleson ; August 11, 1949 - January 6, 1990) is a British actor and director. Best known for the role of Olympic champion in running Eric Liddell in Hugh Hudson ’s historical drama Fire Chariots (1981). In addition, his role as Rev. Charles Andrews in the biographical picture of Richard Attenborough's “ Gandhi ” became notable. Charlson also played a lot on theater stages in the UK, famous for his roles in productions of Guys and Dolls, Cat on a Hot Roof, Hamlet and many others.

Ian Charlson was gay. In 1986, he was diagnosed with HIV , and in January 1990, he died of complications caused by AIDS . His death was the first celebrity death in the UK , openly attributed to AIDS [4] . The actor wished that after his death the true reason for his passing away should be made public. This has helped to raise awareness of HIV / AIDS and to focus more on patients with AIDS.
He was named after the theater prize, which since 1991 has been awarded annually to actors under the age of 30.
