Olive, Lindsay Shepherd

Lindsay Shepherd Oliv ( born Lindsay Shepherd Olive , April 30, 1917 - October 19, 1988 ) is an American mycologist , professor at the University of North Carolina .

Biography

Born in the city of Florence in South Carolina . In 1934 he entered the University of North Carolina , where he first studied chemistry, but soon became interested in botany and mycology. Under the leadership of John Nathaniel Couch, Olive graduated from a university with a bachelor’s degree in 1938, received a master’s degree in 1940, and defended his Ph.D. thesis in 1942.

In 1942 he married Anna Jean Grant, also studying at Chapel Hill.

In 1944, Olive worked for some time as a military mycologist-phytopathologist in Beltsville . In 1945 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Georgia , in 1946 he moved to the University of Louisiana , where he became an adjunct professor. Since 1949 - at Columbia University .

In the 1950s, Olive began to study the systematics and biology of cellular slizhevikov. In 1968 he returned to Chapel Hill, where he soon became an honored university professor.

In 1982, Oliva was awarded the Eminent Mycologist of the Mycological Society of America.

Olive traveled extensively, visited many countries in Europe, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, New Zealand.

In the last years of his life, Oliva was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease . October 19, 1988, he passed away.
