Biography
Pak was born in 1943 or 1944 in Korea during the Japanese occupation. [1] [5] He began to engage in martial arts from childhood, starting with boxing , then did judo , and then - taekwondo. The park was one of the twelve original (forming style and terminology) masters of the Taekwon-Do Association of Korea. In 1964, he became the second president of this organization. [6] Between 1965 and 1967, Pak reached 4th dan and led the training of South Korean soldiers in Vietnam . [7]
In 1970, Pak left the army and moved to Canada, where he met his future wife Linda in Toronto. [8] In the 1970s, Pak created the Manitoba Taekwondo Association and later the Winnipeg Taekwondo Institute. [9] In 1975, he received the 6th dan. [10] In 1978 and 1979, Park accompanied Choi Hong-hee to performances at taekwondo masters in Europe. [11] In 1984, having already received the 8th dan, he held a seminar in Brisbane ( Australia ). [12] [13] In November 1984, Pak was elected Secretary General of the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF). [14] He also served as ITF Technical Chair. [fifteen]
On June 14, 1990, Park founded the Global Taekwondo Federation (GTF), a year after he left the ITF due to disagreements with Choi Hong Hee, who began working with the DPRK. [1] [16] [17]
Already as the head of GTF, Park developed six additional hyungs, which supplemented the formal ITF complexes, and also removed the Juche-tul form, named after the DPRK's totalitarian ideology. [fifteen]
Among the students and colleagues of Pak can be identified Sabri Salleh ( Malaysia ), who joined the GTF in 1998. [18] Shortly before his death, Pak secured the 9th Dan (GTF) for Salleh. [eighteen]
Park died April 11, 2002 as a result of a serious illness, leaving his wife and three children: Julianne, Heather and Christopher. [1] [5] [19] Linda Pak succeeded her husband as president of GTF [5] [19] , receiving the honorary 9th dan and the title of honorary grandmaster. [twenty]
