Biography
Michael Gilday was born on January 5, 1987 in the city of Iqaluit of the Northwest Territories (now the territory of Nunavut ). Skating began at the age of five in 1992, following the example of one of his friends.
After graduating from high school he entered the University of Calgary , where he received a bachelor's degree in commerce. In Calgary, for six years he had the opportunity to train at the Olympic Speed Skating Arena , then moved to the National Training Center in Montreal . At competitions represented skating club of the city of Yellowknife .
Already in the 2008/09 season, he competed with the strongest short-trekists of the country, made his debut at the World Cup, in particular, at one of the stages, took second place. He tried to qualify for the home Olympics in Vancouver , but at the qualifying rounds he finished only 1500 meters at a distance of 1500 meters, only 0.13 seconds was enough for him to qualify.
He achieved the first serious success at the international level in the 2010/11 season when he entered the main team of the Canadian national team and visited the World Championships in Sheffield , from where he brought the gold medal award, won jointly with Charles Amlin , Olivier Jean and François Amlin in the relay race 5000 meters. Also this season, he achieved the greatest success in the World Cup - he won the 1500 meters discipline at the stage in Quebec (this victory turned out to be the only one in the individual competition of the world cups).
The 2011/12 season was almost completely forced to miss, because at a training session before the World Cup in Moscow, as a result of a fall on the ice, I had a shoulder injury and then recovered for a long time.
In 2013, he spoke at the World Championships in Debrecen , where he again became the champion in the relay - while his partners were Olivier Jean, Charles Cournuaye and Charles Hamelin. In addition, he was close to getting into the number of winners at distances of 1000 and 1500 meters - in both cases he finished fifth in the final.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, Gilday won the right to defend the country's honor at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi - in the men's individual standings at a distance of 1500 meters he managed to reach the semifinals and was placed in the final protocol of the competition on line 17, while in the relay with the brothers Amlen and Olivier Jean took the final sixth place.
Shortly after the end of the Sochi Olympics, he announced the end of his career as a professional athlete [1] .
