Argentina at the 2018 Winter Olympics

Argentina was represented by 7 athletes in 3 sports at the 2018 Winter Olympics . The Argentine national team became the smallest since the 1998 Games , when the country was represented by only two athletes. At the Games opening ceremony, the right to carry the national flag was entrusted to the 2014 Games participant, skier Sebastiano Gastaldi [1] , and at the closing ceremony, Veronica Maria Ravenna [2] sled, who took 24th place in the women's competitions . According to the results of the competition, the Argentine national team, which took part in its nineteenth Winter Olympic Games, again remained without medals.

National Team

The application of the Argentine national team for participation in the 2018 Games included 7 athletes (4 men and 3 women), who performed in 4 Olympic disciplines. The application for the Games also included 7 coaches and 2 officials. The head of the Olympic delegation at the Winter Games was Magdalena Cast Freire [1] .

Qualification of athletes for participation in the Olympic Games was carried out on the basis of the FIS special qualification rating as of January 21, 2018 [3] . At the same time, the NOC for participation in the Olympic Games could choose only the athlete who entered the top 500 Olympic rating in his discipline, and at the same time had a certain number of points, according to the qualification table [4] . Countries that did not have participants among the 500 strongest athletes could only apply for category B quotas in technical disciplines [4] . According to the results of the qualification selection, the Argentine national team won 2 Olympic licenses of category “A” [5] .

  Cross country skiing

Qualification of athletes for participation in the Olympic Games was carried out on the basis of the FIS special qualification rating as of January 21, 2018 [6] . To obtain an Olympic license of category “A”, athletes needed to score a maximum of 100 points in the FIS distance rating [7] . Moreover, each NOC can apply for the Games 1 man and 1 woman, if they have met the qualification criterion “B”, according to which they can take part in sprint and races of 10 km for women or 15 km for men [7] . According to the results of the qualification selection, the Argentine national team won 2 Olympic licenses of category “B” [8] .

  Snowboard

Compared to previous Games, the competition program has undergone several changes. Instead of parallel slalom , big-air competitions were added [9] . In all disciplines, with the exception of the men's snowboard cross-country, the number of competitors changed, the semifinal round was canceled, and in the freestyle finals, athletes began to make three attempts [10] . Athletes were qualified for the Olympic Games on the basis of the FIS special qualification rating as of January 21, 2018 [11] . For each discipline, certain conditions were established by fulfilling which athletes could qualify for joining the national team to participate in the Olympic Games [12] . According to the results of the qualification selection, the Argentine national team was not able to win Olympic licenses, but after redistributing the quotas, they got places in the men's snowboard cross, slopestyle and big air [13] .

  Luge

Qualification of athletes for participation in the Olympic Games was carried out on the basis of the FIL World Cup rating as of January 1, 2018 [14] . According to its results, the Argentine national team was not able to win Olympic licenses [15] , but received one quota in women's competitions after the redistribution of two Russian licenses.
