Gagainis, Juris

Born on September 26, 1944 in Riga . He spent his childhood in the working area of Avota , near the railway and the Russo-Balt factory. In 1968 he graduated from the Riga School of Applied Arts. In 1973 he graduated with honors from the State Art Institute in Tallinn. From 1977 to 1996 he worked as a metal artist at the Decorative Arts Combine. From 1971 to 1973 he taught metal art at the Tallinn Institute of Arts . From 1980 to 1992, he was a teacher at the Design Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts . In 1992 he founded the Department of Metal Design at the Latvian Academy of Arts and until 2012 headed it. In 1994 he was appointed professor.

Since 1975 a member of the Union of Artists of Latvia, since 1995 a member of the Union of Designers of Latvia. In 2006 he was awarded the Order of Three Stars . He was awarded the silver medal of the III International Jewelery Exhibition “Jablonec-71” (Czechoslovakia)

He died on November 12, 2017.

The main theme of the works of Juris Gagainis is the technique of various modifications. The works of Juris are made not only in a realistic style, but also in conceptual forms. The author’s works are distinguished by perfect technical performance ^[1]

The works of Juris Gagainis are in the Museums of the Society of Artists of Latvia, the Art Museum of Latvia , the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia , the Museum of the History of Medicine named after Paul Stradins, the Ministry of Culture of Russia and in private collections in Latvia , the USA , Denmark , Finland , etc.
