He was born in New York , and after his father’s death he was raised by his grandparents on the island of Nevis in the Caribbean . After returning to the United States , he served in the army for two years, and then entered Bloomfield College in New Jersey . He studied acting with John Cassavetes , after which he starred in two of his films “ Shadows ” (1959) and “Too Late Blues” (1961). In 1969, for his role in the movie "Thieves" was nominated for an Oscar . In addition to roles on the big screen, Cross was a frequent visitor to various television shows and TV shows.

In 1970, Cross married the singer Chris Calloway, daughter of Cab Calloway , who bore him a son Rupert Osaza Dia Cross. Shortly after the birth of his son, he was diagnosed with lung cancer . The last years of his life Cross spent on the island of Nevis, where he died in 1973 at the age of 45 years. [2] His son died in 2002 from heart disease caused by drug abuse. [3]
