Shah, Kundan

Kundan Shah ( Hindi कुंदन शाह ; October 19, 1947 - October 7, 2017 ) is an Indian director and screenwriter who shot series and films in Hindi . The most famous work is the black comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (Leave As It Is).

Biography

Kundan Shah was born on October 19, 1947 [2] . In 1968, received a degree in Commerce . He lived for some time in London , but returned to India to enter the , where he showed particular interest in . He graduated from the institute in 1976 and made several documentaries for the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation [3] .

Then he returned to Bombay , where in 1983 he made his debut as a director, having shot the comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron in the genre of [3] . The film was not successful at the box office, but subsequently acquired the status of a cult [2] and brought the creator of the National Film Award for the best debut film [4] [5] .

After a cinematic debut, Kundan switched to television. His television series Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi ushered in an era of sponsored series on Doordarshan . The director became a partner in the company Iskra, founded jointly with , Aziz Mirza , , which was involved in the production of the series Nukkad in 1986-1987. His project, Police Station, was conceived as a series, but ran into censorship problems due to a demonstration of police brutality, and as a result was broadcast as a television film edited from three shot episodes [3] . His other series “Circus” opened the audience to the future superstar of the 1990s Shahrukh Khan , to whom in 1993 the director gave the main role in his melodrama “ Season of Love ”. The film received critical acclaim, including the special Filmfare Award [4] .

The plot of his next work was based on teenage pregnancy and its condemnation by society. The film became one of the highest grossing films in 2000, and also helped to create a career as the leading female actor Prity Zinte [6] . Subsequently, he directed several more films: Hum To Mohabbat Karega (2000), Dil Hai Tumhaara (2002), Ek Se Badhkar Ek (2004), The Three Sisters (2005), Persai Kehta Hain (2006) and P Se PM Tak (2014) ), but had no previous success [7] .

In 2015, Shah refused his National Film Award in protest against the appointment of as the head of the Institute of Film and Television [8] .

The director died in a dream early in the morning on October 7, 2017 as a result of a heart attack [9] .
