Description
In written sources, the church is mentioned as Sergievskaya for 1616 in the "Odoevskaya sentinel book of local and patrimonial lands of the letter and patrol of Ivan Shulepov and the clerk Ivan Fedotiev", which describes the city fortifications of Odoev and says: " Besides the city there are two prison. Ostrog Lesser, oblique, ... Yes, in the same Lesser Ostrog, the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh the Wonderworker and the limit of the Saints Martyr Forol and Lavra , an ancient, Kletsky. And in the church of God's mercy ... ” [2] .
The former church was dismantled due to its dilapidation in 1790. In 1794, at the expense of parishioners and Odoevsky merchant Alexei Ivanovich Serebrennikov, in a new place - on Khlebnaya Square, construction of a new stone church began in the name of the Epiphany of the Lord with aisles : the southern one - in honor of the Miracle Worker Sergius of Radonezh - the former name of the church; the northern - of the saints - the unbounded children of Cosmas and Damian . Finished construction in 1804. The church parish included part of the inhabitants of Odoev himself and a suburban Streletskaya settlement. There was a parish school . There were trading shops at the church, leased during market days and fair days at the Trading (Bread) Square [1] [3] .
In 1886, on the square in the place where there was a public well, a stone chapel was built in the name of the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky in memory of Tsar Alexander II the Liberator . This chapel was assigned to the Epiphany Church.
The church was closed in the 1930s, the completion and the upper tiers of the five-tier bell tower were destroyed, the bells were removed. The temple was thoroughly rebuilt. In Soviet times, it housed the production halls of the drying, then canning plants, currently (2018) the building is abandoned. In 2017, the project of restoration of the temple building was completed, but restoration work is not carried out due to lack of funding [1] [4] [5] . In 2019, work began on the restoration of the altar wall.
