Biography
Bennett was born into a wealthy family and first encountered music at a young age, being a singer in the choir . Bennett attended Abingdon Private School and went deeper into music. In his twenties, he published a collection of Madrigals Volume of 17: Madrigals for Four Voices. Around the same time, he completed the four psalms and the prayer for the Barley Psalter , published in the same year 1599. And although the influence of Wilks and Dowland was read in Bennett's musical style , Thomas Morley was most affected by his work. Bennett’s collection of madrigals includes the famous “Weep, O Mine Eyes”, which is a John Dowland, and contains a piece of the most famous play of the latest “Flow My Tears”, also known in the form of pavans as “Lachrymae Antiquae”. From the dedication of the collection, it can be assumed that approximately Bennett was born, and where he came from.
It can be assumed that John Bennett had good contacts in the upper circles of the English aristocracy : many of his madrigals were written about various celebrations at the royal court or in private residences of wealthy patrons in London . His madrigal “Eliza, her Name Gives Honor” was one of several madrigals written in the name of a person of honor, in this case Queen Elizabeth I. Usually at such events, the boys were choir boys from the Royal Chapel .
In addition to his favorite motets , Bennett also wrote spiritual works for the church liturgy . The main source of inspiration and imitation for him was Thomas Morley. There are no known cases of borrowing music from earlier periods, but he knew the English music of his time perfectly.
