I.V.Sasi

To Iruppu Widu Sasidharan ( Malayal. ഇരുപ്പം വീട് ശശിധരൻ ; March 28, 1948 , Kozhikode , October 24, 2017 , Chennai ), better known as I.V.Sasi, is an Indian director. During his career he directed about 150 films, mainly in the Malayalam language, but also in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu. Winner of the Filmfare Awards South and Kerala State Film Awards .

Biography

I.V.Sasi was born on March 28, 1948 in Kozhikode [2] [3] (now the state of Kerala ). He was educated at [4] [5] .

He began his film career as a production designer in the film Kaliyalla Kalyanam (1968) by A. B. Raj. In the early 1970s, he worked as an operator [5] . As a director, he made his debut in 1975 with the film Ulsavam . Two years later, he made the first color film in Malayalam - Itha Ivide Varae , and two more later - Allauddinum Albhutha Vilakkum - one of the first South Indian films in the CinemaScope format [6] [7] . One of his most successful works was the film Avalude Ravukal (1978), which is a sharp, sexually explicit love story, in which the main role was played by actress , whom he married on August 28, 1980 [8] . The film was dubbed into several languages ​​and is best known as “Her Nights” [5] . It was also the first film in Malayalam to receive an adult-only restriction [7] . Among his other hits, Vartha or Avanazhi (1986), apparently based on a scandal with a case in which a student was tortured and killed in prison. Also among his works on style is the large-budget historical film Ayirathi Thollayirathi Irupathi Onnu (1988), which recreated the famous mop rebellion [5] .

Sashi made 7–8 films annually, often relying on the work of the Marxist writer , in which the hero fights the oppressive modern reality [5] . They collaborated on more than 30 projects. and also wrote scripts for his films. Among the leading actors, Sasi most often worked with Mammutti , having shot 36 films with his participation, including Ee Nadu (1982), Mrugaya (1989) and Inspector Balram (1991). He was the first to give Mohanlal a lead role, making him the second hero in Ineyengillum (1983), and later filming Uyarangalil , Aalkkoottathil Thaniye (1984) and Devasuram (1993). On his account also several films with the participation of Tamil actor Kamal Hassan : Eeta (1978), Allauddinum Arputha Vilakkum (1979), Guru (1980, Tamil) and Karishma (1984, Hindi). His Bollywood projects also include Patita (1980) with Mithun Chakraborty and Anokha Rishta (1986) with Rajesh Khanna [3] .

In the 1980s, he switched to a more esoteric, averaged movie. The years between 1978 and 1991 can be considered the zenith of his career, the decline of which began in the 1990s [9] . His last two projects, Balram Vs Taradas (2006) with Katrina Kaif and Vellathooval (2009) with Nitya Menon, were unsuccessful at box office [7] .

I.V.Sasi died at 11:15 on October 24, 2017 at the Surya hospital in Chennai , where he was taken due to breathing problems [3] . He left a wife and two children: Ani's son and daughter Anu [7] .
