Sheaf knife - an agricultural hand-held wearable tool for cutting a sheaf (screed) of a sheaf in front of a mechanized threshing . Instead of a handle, the shear knife has a belt mount or a support plate perpendicular to the blade. The support plate is adjacent to the edge of the palm and secured to the palm of the straps or using a leather gauntlet. A knife permanently attached to the hand reduces the time it takes to prepare the sheaf for threshing, the worker’s hands are always free to load the sheaves into the thresher and other operations. The blade is curved, the blade is on the inside (ie, the side facing the wrist), the length of the blade is 5–7 cm, and the tip is rounded - this design provides maximum safety [1] [2] [3] .
It was distributed in Germany , Austria , where it was called Garben-Aufschneidemesser, briefly - Garbenmesser (less commonly - Kornmesser) [4] .
The sheaf knife lost its meaning when mechanized harvesting of grain displaced manual harvesting using a scythe or sickle , followed by knitting sheaves.
Ustashi used sheaf knives and their artisanal counterparts when carrying out punitive actions and as a tool for the death penalty of captured Serbs [5] [6] [7] . As such, sheaf knives are called serbosek . Nikola Nikolic describes the Serbosek who fell into the hands of the Yugoslav partisans as having a 12-centimeter blade and a blade on the outside [8] .
