EarthBound , in Japan known as Mother ( Japanese マ ザ ー maza:, eng. Mother ) is a series of three Japanese role-playing games released by Nintendo . The author of the idea of the series of games is a famous Japanese writer, essayist and copywriter Shigeso Itoi . The gameplay is largely inspired by the Dragon Quest series of games, but the entourage of the world is made with an eye to the United States of America at the end of the 20th century. The series is known for its humor, parody of role-playing genre templates, and unusualness within the genre. It includes three games: EarthBound Beginnings of 1989 for the Famicom gaming console (released in Japan under the name Mother ), EarthBound for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System , released in Japan in 1994 under the name Mother 2 , and Mother 3 for the Game Boy Advance , published in 2006 , but never released outside of Japan. Although in Japan the series of games is quite popular and well-known, in the West, the series did not have such a mass character, however, having gained a cult status.
