Biography

Born in Prague on October 11, 1925 . He studied at Charles University in Prague, graduated in 1949. Since 1946 he has been associated with the botanical department of the National Museum in Prague.

He published his first works in 1942-1943, in which he described the species Volvariella and Entoloma rhodopolium , discovered by him in the vicinity of Prague. In 1964 he defended the dissertation of a candidate of biological sciences.

A broad-profile mycologist, Svrchek investigated agaric mushrooms, myxomycetes , gasteromycetes , discomycetes , lichens , pyrenomycetes , imperfect mushrooms on plants and wood. In 1958, he prepared the first volume of Flora of the Czechoslovak Republic, for which he conducted a monographic treatment of Hymenogastrales , Hysterangiales , Melanogastrales . In 1960 he published a monograph of Tomentella and related families.

The best-known works of Svrchek on discomycetes. He actively corresponded with specialists in this group, in particular, with Richard Corf and Richard Dennis . The first work on the discomits of the Czech Republic was published by him in 1947. Svrček revised the discomycetes described earlier by Joseph Velenovsky : in 1954 he published an revision of Orbilia , in 1976 - Peziza , in 1979 - of opercular discomycetes, and in 1985 - of percussion discomycetes. In 1981, he prepared the “Catalog of opercular discomitets of Czechoslovakia”. Many of his works were subsequently translated into English.

In 1992, he officially left the staff of the National Museum of Prague, but continued to engage in research activities. The Museum currently stores several tens of thousands of mushroom samples collected by Svrchek.

Died April 29, 2017 at the age of 91.
