Biography
Karl Ruge is the son of the Berlin physician Ludwig Magnus Wilhelm Ruge (1812 / 1814-1897). Mother Mary Louise Caroline Philippi Mayer (1825–1908) is the daughter of the Berlin gynecologist Karl Wilhelm Mayer . Her sister Ferdinand Amalia Rosalia (1832–1913) in 1850 married Rudolph Virkhov .
Having completed his medical education, Ruge led a medical and obstetric practice and in 1871, on the recommendation of his uncle Rudolf Virchow, headed the laboratory of microscopic and clinical research of the gynecological clinic " Charité ". Ruge also worked for a long time with Karl Schröder . In 1882-1912, he led the pathological institute at the university gynecological clinic. In 1896 he received the title of professor.
For the famous “Gynecological Diagnostics Manual ” ( Lehrbuch der gynäkologischen Diagnostik ) Ruge wrote sections on microscopic diagnosis. Together with gynecologist Johann Fate, he developed the basics of gynecological histopathology, in particular in the microscopic diagnosis of early detection of uterine cancer. Ruge and Faith are considered the first scientists to describe cervical cancer . In 1878 Ruge and Feith introduced conizations .
