Konstantin Pupurs ( Latvian: Konstantīns Pupurs ; March 5, 1964, Riga - September 10, 2017) - Latvian political scientist and linguist. Member of the Helsinki-86 group, activist of the Third Atmoda . Biography
Born on March 5, 1964 in Riga. In 1981 he graduated from Riga 66th Secondary School. From 1983 to 1986 he studied at the Moscow Historical and Archival Institute , then - at the University of Latvia at the Faculty of History and Philosophy. Since 1987, he actively participated in the activities of the Nature Protection Club.
On June 14, 1987, unfurled the flag of the Republic of Latvia at the Freedom Monument and, together with the members of the Helsinki-86 group, took part in the first anti-Soviet demonstration, for the first time carrying the Latvian flag through the streets of Riga.
In 1988, he interrupted his studies due to deprivation of a passport and expulsion from the USSR . He participated in the work of Latvian national organizations in Western Europe . In 1990, after receiving injuries during a fight, he left for the USA. In 1992 he returned to Latvia and continued his studies. In 1999, he received a bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . In 2003, he received a master's degree from the London Higher School of Economics and Political Science.
In 2004, Pupurs joined the United States Navy . In 2007, he was awarded the rank of lieutenant. He served in Iraq and in Germany . He was noted in the service, awarded with medals. In 2010 he returned to Latvia and joined the National Association “Everything for Latvia!” . He ran for deputies from the National Association in the elections to the 10th and 11th Saeima of Latvia . Since 2011, he worked at the Maritime Academy as a methodologist, lecturer.
