Biography
Born December 26, 1867 in the Kharkov province . First he graduated from the Kharkov Real School, then the chemistry department of the Riga Polytechnic School - with honors in 1895 [1] with the title of chemical engineer [2] . As a student, in 1887, joined the Russian student corporation Fraternitas Arctica . Returning to Kharkov, he became a volunteer at the Kharkov Practical Technological Institute , but the next year he left for St. Petersburg , where he began working at the Okhta gunpowder plant as an assistant to the head of the workshop in the alcohol distillation and ether production department.
In 1897, he worked as a chemist in one of the factories of the Tula Blast Furnaces Joint-Stock Company; September 1, 1897 received the position of assistant chemical department at the Riga Polytechnic Institute and a year later was sent on a business trip abroad to specialize in the field of decoration and dyeing of fabrics. Returning to Riga, on July 1, 1899 he was appointed professor of chemical technology; since 1901 - college adviser , since 1905 - state adviser ; since July 1, 1906 - associate professor; May 2, 1911 was elected professor of the department of chemical technology; since July 26, 1917 - an ordinary professor . He was awarded the orders of St. Stanislav of the 2nd degree (01.01.1908) and St. Anna of the 2nd degree (01.01.1913) [2] .
In 1901, he began conducting experiments in the dyeing laboratory of the Polytechnic Institute for Applied Enzymology . In 1911, under his leadership , P.P. Budnikov completed his thesis.
In 1915, together with the institute, Shimansky evacuated to Moscow , and then to Ivanovo-Voznesensk , where the Ivanovo-Ascension Polytechnic Institute was formed on the basis of the Riga Polytechnic Institute in 1918. Shimansky was elected professor and head of the department of technology of fibrous materials, as well as deputy dean of the Faculty of Chemistry [3] . At that time, in addition to administrative and teaching work, he carried out a large scientific work on the cotonization of linen flax, the mercerization of plant fibers with nitric acid, the use of phosphorescent compounds in chintz printing, etc. In the first city library he gave a course of popular lectures.
In 1922, Szymanski went to Riga, where he worked as the director of the Riga vocational school until his death.
Family
In 1911 he married a widow, Maria (?) Ivanovna Svetlova [2] .

- ↑ The first dean of the Faculty of Chemistry was Karl Karlovich Blacher (1867—?), Who graduated from the Riga Polytechnic School a year earlier than Szymanski in 1894. The first rector was Mikhail Nikolaevich Berlov (1867-1935). All three left for Riga in the early 1920s.
