Biography
Ole Nielsen Ravna was born on October 31, 1841 in the town of Karasjok, Finnmark , Norway . He owned his own herd of deer. In 1888, the 46-year-old Ole Ravna joined the expedition of Nansen Fritjof with his fellow countryman Samuel Balto . To the disappointment of Nansen, Ole was married and had 5 children. Moreover, when Ole Ravna went to Greenland, it turned out that he was suffering from seasickness , like Balto, and during sea storms he was comforted by reading the New Testament .
In Greenland, the expedition members had to overcome a long path along the steep slopes with a glacier; the situation was complicated due to the severe climate. Despite this, Ole Ravna and Samuel Balto were quite adapted to similar weather conditions. In the end, the entire expedition managed to cross the Greenland ice sheet. Since the last ships in the current season have already sailed from Gothub , the expedition had to stay in Greenland for the winter .
On April 15, 1889, the expedition sailed on the steamer Vidbjörn and on May 21 reached Copenhagen . After 9 days, they returned on the ship "Cupronickel" in Oslo . For his participation, Ole Ravna received in 1893 a silver medal from King Oscar II .
In 1905, at the age of 64, Ole Ravna again went to Greenland with his fellow countryman Isak Klememsen and the great Danish polar explorer Knud Rasmussen with the goal of developing reindeer husbandry. While en route from Finnmark to Copenganen, Ole and Isak met with Nansen Fridtjof.
On August 11, 1906, Ole Ravna passed away in Porsanger , Norway. He was buried there at the Lakselv cemetery. In 2011, in Karasjok, a monument was erected to both of them in memory of Ola Ravn and Samuel Balto.
