Western Polesie (biosphere reserve)

West Polesie (2012) is an international transboundary biosphere reserve created at the junction of the borders of Belarus , Poland and Ukraine . In the lowland territories it is the only trilateral (created with the participation of three countries) protected territory in the world. Included in the UNESCO Worldwide Biosphere Reserve Network .

History

To protect rare natural complexes in the Shatsky Lakes region in 1983, the Shatsky National Nature Park with an area of ​​32,500 hectares was created . In 2002, the Shatsky Biosphere Reserve was created under the auspices of UNESCO with an area of ​​48,977 hectares [1] . The Polessky National Park (Polish), opened in 1990, covers an area of ​​9,760 hectares on the Polish side, which together with the adjoining territory up to the eastern Polish border makes up the West Polessky Biosphere Reserve [2] . In 2004, a biosphere reserve “Pribuzhskoye Polesye” was created on the basis of the republican landscape reserve, with an area of ​​48,024 hectares [3] . In 2012, all three biosphere reserves combined to form the Western Polesie international transboundary biosphere reserve with a total area of ​​263 016 ha [4] . On the plains, this is the only trilateral (created with the participation of 3 countries) protected territory in the world.
