The Moscow Mint of Goznak is one of two operating mints in Russia, along with the mint in St. Petersburg .

Engaged in the manufacture of coins, medals and orders by state order. It also carries out orders for minting coins of foreign countries. For example, at the Moscow Mint all coins of Abkhazia ( Abkhazian apsaras ) were minted, part of the coins of India [1] . The Mint carries out private orders for the manufacture of badges, medals and tokens.
History
The history of coin minting in Moscow dates back several centuries, but the date of foundation of the modern enterprise of the Moscow Mint is considered to be April 25, 1942 [2] , when the USSR People's Commissariat for Finance issued an order to create the Moscow branch of the mint as a part of Goznak’s office. It was created on the basis of the "Metalworker" artel Mosgormetremssoyuz [3] .
The initial task entrusted to the Moscow Mint was the development and issue of medals “For Courage” and “For Military Merit”, and at the end of 1942, the production of orders “Red Star” and “World War II” was added to these medals. In the same 1942, the factory mastered the production of orders of the Badge of Honor and medals "For Labor Valor" and "For Labor Distinction".
In 1968, the USSR Council of Ministers decided to build a new mint production complex. Construction began in 1974 and was completed in 1983.
In 1975, the mint began producing gold pieces. In 1977, a separate workshop was created for minting a series of commemorative coins issued in honor of the 1980 Summer Olympics , the technology of minting proof- quality coins was mastered.
In 1983, the small coinage minting shop began work.
In October 1991, the Moscow Mint produced the first state award of the Russian Federation - the medal “ Defender of a Free Russia ”, which was awarded to active participants in the events of August 1991.
The first circulations of coins of the Russian Federation at the Moscow Mint were issued in 1993 . In 1996, the MMD produced the first gold coins of Russia weighing 1 kilogram.
